The Stock intake system of your Subaru isn't exactly ideal for making maximum power. Engineered with concerns like Noise, Vibration and Harshness first in mind over performance, your OEM intake is sucking away valuable horsepower. Upgrading the intake system frees up power and allows your boxer four to breathe easier, sharpening throttle response, enhancing power, and if you can keep your foot out of it, an intake can even help to improve fuel economy.

How Can I Upgrade My Subaru's Intake?
There are several styles of intake available and each offers its own advantages and disadvantages. These are the most common types of Intake Upgrades: Cold Air Intake Systems, Ram Air Intake Systems, Short-Ram Air Intake Systems and Performance Replacement Air Filters.

What does a Cold Air Intake do for my Subaru?

Perrin Performance Cold air Intake Air Flow Direction with Cold Air Intake

Subarus are no stranger to needing cooler air - that's how the famous WRX Hood Scoop came into being, to draw cool outside air through the intercooler. The same principle is used for a cold air intake - bringing cool air to where you need it. Many inexperienced enthusiasts are of the opinion that a "cold air intake” is a conical filter smashed onto the intake inlet - and that's not the case at all. The fact is, a proper Cold Air Intake is a heck of a lot more than a cone filter. A true CAI reroutes the intake path to suck in cooler air from an outside source, usually relocated to pull cool air from the the fender or in the bumper ahead of the radiator - such is the case with the Perrin Performance Cold Air Intake for BRZ shown above. By drawing air from an isolated source, the intake avoids ingesting the hot air in the engine bay.

Cold Air Intake systems often utilize a sealed airbox or feature a heat shield to keep the hot air away from the intake. Maintaining a cool incoming air charge is important, because colder air, being more dense, has more oxygen, creating a better air/fuel mixture, allowing your Subaru Boxer to develop more power and operate at peak efficiency.

Injen Technology Intake

Most factory Intake systems, Subarus included, are engineered specifically to run quietly to please "the average consumer", because not everyone appreciates engine noise the way an enthusiast might - and unfortunately, to achieve this quiet operation, the intakes have baffles or bottlenecks to cut down noise and the intake routing might be less-than-efficient due to packaging concerns. These compromises to be quieter come at the expense of horsepower. Because the engine can't breathe freely, it can't make as much power or run as efficiently. By equipping a free-flowing intake system that draws in the coolest air, your Subaru's engine will perform to its maximum potential. modbargains features a range of "Cold Air Intake" systems from the best known names in airflow, such as: aFe Intake, Takeda, Greddy, Injen Technology and Perrin Performance.

What is a Drop-In Air Filter Upgrade and what will it do for my Subaru?

Perrin Drop In air FiltersAFE Air filters for Subaru Flow Measurements with AFE Intake

An easy - and inexpensive- way to upgrade your intake system is to install a high flow direct replacement air filter. This sort of upgrade is considered "OEM+". It's better than stock, and because the upgraded filter simply replaces the thick, poor-flowing air filter element and resides within the stock housing, the warranty is unaffected. We offer Drop-In performance replacement filters for Subaru from aFe Intake, Perrin Performance and more.
