Since we've built quite a few Subaru vehicles ourselves, we've got the experience to let you know about issues you may encounter and offer the sort of pro-tips you'll only get from another enthusiast.
There are many ways to get more power out of your Subaru's boxer engine, and often you'll achieve peak power with a specific combination of performance parts working together to make your engine run more efficiently and make more horsepower at the wheels as well as improve that awful dip in your Subaru's torque curve. Remember, when modifying your Subaru it's important to keep reliability in mind, as your stock internals, particularly if you have higher miles, can only tolerate so much, so be sure to "Stage 0" your car before any modifications.
What is Stage 0? It means ensuring that all of your engine's needed maintenance has been done- timing belt, water pump, hoses, seals, engine, trans and diff oil changes, inspect all oil lines for leaks and ensure that your charge pipe clamps are tight and leak-free. By doing Stage 0 first, you're helping prevent problems that may be more noticeable - and damaging - at higher power levels.
We invite you to chat with our Modification Experts. We have several specialists on staff that offer a wealth of technical expertise on Boxer Performance. If you're looking for something specific, just ask! We can probably get it for you.

What types ofExhaustSystems are available for mySubaru?
The design of an exhaust system varies depending on what parts of an exhaust system are replaced. Systems can be either bolt on or weld-in, depending on style and manufacturer. Exhaust systems are typically offered as header-back, cat-back or axle-back, which refer to how much of the exhaust system is included in that kit.
For Subaru applications, we primarily offer catback exhaust systems, Mid-Pipes and Downpipes, as axle-back doesn't appear to be a popular option. We offer exhaust systems for Subaru from HKS, Takeda, Berk Technology, ARK Performance,Borla, Magnaflow, Tanabe and Perrin.
This is the most popular option when enthusiasts choose to upgrade their exhaust system. This type of exhaust includes different mufflers like an Axle-Back system but also includes larger diameter exhaust tubing and spans the entire length of the exhaust system rear of the catalytic converters- which explains the name "Cat-Back". This type of system offers tangible performance gains as well as an improvement in sound and exterior appearance. A wide variety of Cat-Back systems are available for your Subaru from the finest manufacturers in the exhaust industry, including: Ark Performance, Berk Technology, Borla, HKS, Magnaflow, Perrin, Takeda and Tanabe.
Headers (aka Exhaust Manifolds)
Headers are the exhaust manifolds - specifically, "headers" usually refer to a high performance exhaust manifold. Available manufactured in cast iron, cast aluminum, 304 Stainless Steel and even exotic materials, a header is often the final word in exhaust system upgrades. In the case of a naturally aspirated or supercharged (non-turbo) vehicle, the exhaust manifolds are connected to the exhaust ports on the Cylinder Head of the engine and channels exhaustgases out of the engine and by smoothing out the flow of exhaust gas out, the engine can operate more efficiently and as a result, it makes more horsepower - and torque. The enhanced design can remove or relocate catalytic converters integrated into the OEM manifolds in some applications and some are engineered for precise equal-length manifold runners ("equal length headers") for even greater gains and efficiency. Supercharged engines in particular, will respond more to a set of headers than a naturally aspirated car. We offer Headers/Exhaust Manifolds from Borla and other fine exhaust manufacturers.
Downpipes / Mid Pipes
The downpipe is a part of the exhaust system usually almost exclusively found on turbocharged vehicles. On a turbocharged car, like your Subaru Boxer, you'll have not just a downpipe, but an up pipe too, and upgrading these parts of the exhaust system will decrease spool up times, increase power and throttle response. A handful of Naturally Aspirated Downpipes do exist, and this is the case for the BRZ. The Downpipe connects the header collector outlet to the rest of the exhaust system. Many OEM downpipes feature integral catalytic converters, which are often highly restrictive, and this is the case for you Turbo Subaru guys. Performance downpipes streamline the flow of exhaust gases out of the engine for better throttle response and more power and often either omit the catalytic converter or replace it with a high performance unit. modbargains offers downpipes from Berk TechnologyBorlaandTanabe.
