Upgrading your Subaru's Stock Brake System
If you want to upgrade your Subaru's brake system without resorting to an all out big brake kit, there are a couple of things you can do to give your Subaru some help in the braking department, and these upgrades are especially ideal to get your STi ready for a track day weekend.
Installing a StopTech Stage II Brake Kit will replace the OEM front rotors with performance designed high quality replacements while retaining your factory Subaru brake calipers and our upgraded rotors from R1 Concepts even come complete with performance compound OEM Replacement brake pads.
Replacing the OEM rotors with high-performance design rotors affords you the benefit of extra-wide cooling vanes and gives you the option of cross-drilling (great for venting hot exhaust gasses to help prevent/minimize brake fade) or slotting to keep the pads clean and biting evenly - or even both drilled and slotted to get the benefits of both features.
Shallow, sharp edged but radiused bottom grooves milled into cast iron discs to provide leading edges for bite and a path for the fire band of gases and friction material to exit through. Slotting also prevents brake pad glazing and reduces debris by capturing and removing debris as you brake while driving- the result of the slotting is better braking, longer pad life and a reduction in rotor wear. If the slots fill up with pad material, the system is operating at too high a temperature.
This upgrade package also features Stainless Braided Brake Lines and StopTech STR600 Performance Brake Fluid to match. Most vehicles are built with cost in mind to some degree, and most cars come from the factory with rubber brake lines. These rubber brake lines, as you might imagine, being made of soft, stretchy rubber, have a tendency to expand under pressure. This expansion under pressure causes a loss of brake pressure and thus diminishes brake force and leads to a spongy feeling brake pedal. Replacing the soft rubber OEM brake lines with Stainless Braided Lines will give you a firmer pedal feel. We offer brake upgrades from Brembo, StopTech, R1 Concepts and other fine brands.
