The suspension of your Pontiac was engineered to dampen bumps in the road and to aid cornering capability. Typically, most cars will have some sort of a spring, either a coil spring or leaf spring, working with a shock absorber to both keep the body of the car from coming into contact with the wheels and provide a smooth ride while driving. What suspension upgrades are there for my GTO?
Most people choose to upgrade their suspension in one or more ways - listed below is a quick guide to give you an idea of what the parts of your suspension system are with further explanation.
What will Lowering Springs or Sport Springs do to my Pontiac?
As the name implies, these lower the car's ride height (how high the car sits off the ground) and improve handling. Lowering springsreplace your OEM springs to lower your vehicle.Sport Springsare generally more conservative than lowering springs in the amount of drop and focus on improving the vehicle’s ride and handling characteristics.
Sport Springs are a great choice if you want to improve handling performance without resorting to coilovers. Sport Springs or Lowering Springs should be paired with a shock that can compensate for the reduction in ride height to best preserve ride quality. If you want a comfortable daily driver with a mild drop,Sport Springs/Lowering Springsare probably the best option for you. If you want your Pontiac’s suspension to stay close to stock, Sport Springs are the right choice. Sport Springs are available from Eibach Springs and H&R Springs for Pontiac G8 and Pontiac GTO.
Coil-Over Strutsaka "Coilovers"
This upgrade replaces the OEM shock and coil with a special shock unit that is housed inside a performance coil. ACoilover, orCoil-Spring-Over-Strutis a shock absorber with a coil spring surrounding the shock, which are assembled as a unit before they’re installed in a vehicle, as opposed to on many vehicles where the spring and strut are separate pieces .Coiloverstypically allow the greatest drop in ride height and are the best solution if "maximum handling performance” is the goal of your build. Go to Pontiac Coilovers.
Generally speaking, the primary benefit of coilovers setups is adjustable ride height, which is changed utilizing a threaded spring perch to lower the ride height, and higher end models usually feature knobs that adjust damping, bound and rebound. Contrary to popular belief, Coilovers are not just for track racing – there are many excellent street and stance applicationstoo.
If you want to drastically lower your car statically, want superior handling performance or simply desire the ability to "dial in” or adjust your suspension,Coilovers are the best choice for you. We offer high quality Coil-Over Struts from BC Racing and KW.
Can I raise my suspension with Coilovers?
No.While specialty "lifted” RALLY coilovers thatdo notlower the car exist for off-road and rally-cross applications, and lift-kits exist for the purpose of increasing ground clearance, this is not what the majority ofcoilovers are designed to do.
Do I have to buy Camber/Caster Plates to use Coilovers?
No.WhileCamber/Casterplates do really allow you to "dial in” your suspension, youdo NOTneedthem in order to run coilovers – in fact, most applications are just fine without them. Unless youreallyneed 5 degrees of negative camber, you do NOT needCamber Caster plates. Some Coilovers, such as race-oriented Eibach models, include their own Camber Caster plates so you don't need to buy them.
Sway Bars/Anti-Roll Bars
Sway bars connect the left and right sides of the suspension to one another to help reduce body roll during fast cornering or over irregularities in the surface of the road. Aftermarket sway bars also typically include new sway bar mount bushings to ensure that overly-soft OEM bushings do not interfere with the new sway bar. Sway bars are one of the best things you can do for your car as for bang-for-the-buck performance. The Sway Bars reduce body roll during fast cornering, or over irregularities in the surface of the road. We offer Performance Sway Bars from Hotchkis and other fine manufacturers. See Sway Bars for Pontiac models.
