Gas Vehicles
Higher compression ratio engines and engines with superchargers or turbo
chargers were designed to use only premium octane, so only one Power
Tuning program for premium octane is provided. But, if your car or truck
came from the factory capable of using more economical regular octane,
then two optimized tuning programs are provided: one for premium,
and the other for regular. In most cases, Hypertech’s exclusive Power
Tuning for regular octane provides excellent power gains, almost as much
power as premium octane. If you are using premium octane, and you want
all out, maximum power, then select premium octane Power Tuning.
E-85/Flex Fuel Vehicles
We recommend premium octane tuning for vehicles using E-85 fuel. The
improved engine tuning will increase the part-throttle efficiency and
wide-open throttle performance compared to the factory tuning.
Diesel Vehicles
Three stages of Power Tuning are available. Even the highest power
level Stage 3, maintains safe EGTs while towing the maximum weight
specified by the vehicle manufacturer. No other tuner offers this level
of power for towing. Hypertech’s low EGTs, proper transmission shifting
and superior tuning that doesn’t require de-fueling, giving the Max
Energy Power Programmer the performance advantage. |

Raise Your Top Speed Limiter to Match the Speed Rating of
Your Tires!

When you feel the need for speed, Hypertech's advanced Power
Programmer III lets you electronically adjust your vehicle's
top speed limiter to match the speed rating of
factory-approved high-performance tires. The maximum speed
of many modern vehicles is governed by the onboard computer.
The stock computer is programmed to shut down the engine
when the vehicle exceeds the speed rating of the original
equipment tires. But if you have installed tires with a
higher speed rating for off-highway competition in
sanctioned events, your vehicle may be able to achieve a
faster top speed. A tire's maximum safe speed under perfect
conditions is marked on its sidewall. The codes for popular
high-performance tires are: T = 118 mph, U = 124 mph, H =
130 mph, V = 149 mph, Z = 149+ mph.
The Power Programmer III gives you the power to adjust the
computer's top speed limiter to match these speed ratings
(depending on application). Hypertech urges you to drive
responsibly and obey all posted speed limits when driving on
public highways.

Adjust Cooling Fan On/Off
Temperatures!

With the Power Programmer, you can
electronically adjust the "on/off"
temperatures of your vehicle's
electric cooling fans. When used
with a Hypertech PowerStat,
low-temperature thermostat, this
produces a cooler, denser intake

Hypertech is easing the pain of rising prices at
the gas pump. Hypertech has developed exclusive
"Dual Fuel" tuning calibrations that deliver
virtually the same power increases with regular
gas as they do with premium. Hypertech's Power
Programmer is the only device that offers this
powerful Dual Fuel feature.
"The truth is that most trucks make exactly the
same power on tuning optimized for regular as
they do with optimized premium," explained Mark
Heffington, the founder and president of
Hypertech. "For these vehicles, there is never a
reason to use more expensive premium unleaded."
While some competitors claim to have tuning for
regular gas, their calibrations for regular gas
typically make no more power than the stock
tuning. In contrast, Hypertech's optimized power

For example, Hypertech Power Tuning for a 2003
Hummer H2 with a 6.0-liter V-8 engine adds 17
horsepower over stock with regular gas and 22
horsepower with premium.

chassis dynamometers to develop fuel curves and
ignition timing calibrations to maximize

If you've installed non-stock tire sizes for more grip on
the road, taller tires for more traction on the strip, or a
different rear gear ratio, you must reprogram your vehicle
computer for correct speedometer and odometer readings, as

The onboard computer controls the maximum engine rpm in

down the engine when it reaches the redline. But if you have

Diagnostics gives the user the ability to read
and clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes. It also
provides an easy to understand description,
written in plain language, so there is no need
for shop manuals or service departments to
explain it to you.

Internet Updates

The Max Energy
Programmer comes with a USB cable and a CD
containing software to enable quick updates over
the internet. If your vehicle has a new
calibration not available when your Max
Energy Power Programmer was manufactured, it
is possible that you will see a "Cal not found"
message on the Max Energy display screen.
If this occurs, you can simply update your
Max Energy with the correct new calibration
via the internet. The CD also contains an
installation video and a printable version of
the instruction manual.

Important Note:
During programming, there must be no additional load and
changes in current draw on the battery. So disconnect any
accessories (such as cell phone, iPod, radar detector, or
any other device) plugged into the cigarette lighter or
other 12 volt outlets before starting the installation
process. All electrical accessories such as the radio,
windows, a/c, heater, wipers, lights, etc. must be turned
"off". Keep all doors closed so that interior lights will be
"off" and no alarms will be sounding. If your vehicle is
equipped with OnStar, satellite radio, remote starter, or
aftermarket speakers/amplifiers, you must locate and remove
the fuses to disable those devices before programming. |

How Do We Tune?
Power Tuning is a procedure that Hypertech
invented and developed to improve the
performance and efficiency of
computer-controlled vehicles. An internal
combustion engine needs air, fuel, and spark the
familiar "Combustion Triangle" illustrated here.
Hypertech Power Tuning optimizes these three
elements to produce maximum performance. An
engine's power output is directly proportional
to the amount of air and fuel that it can burn.
Hypertech Power Tuning maximizes engine
performance by burning the air/fuel mixture as
efficiently as possible, thereby extracting
maximum power. Power Tuning replaces the stock
calibrations in the onboard computers used in
late-model cars and trucks. These complex
programs control important engine functions such
as spark timing and fuel delivery. The only way
to modify fuel delivery and spark timing to
increase power is to optimize the tuning
information supplied to the computer. This is
exactly what Hypertech Power Tuning does.
It is a slow, demanding, expensive process, but
it is the only way to optimize engine tuning.
Only Hypertech has the personnel, the custom
equipment, and the dedication to do it...for all
tuning products.
The Art and Science of Power Tuning
The team of engineers and technicians at our R&D
center in Memphis uses two computerized chassis
dynamometers to develop the most powerful tuning
programs possible. First they experimentally
adjust the spark timing to obtain the highest
torque and power readings at a given engine rpm.
Then they adjust the air/fuel ratio to obtain
the highest possible power and torque readings
that an optimized air/fuel mixture can produce.
After the spark timing and air/fuel ratio for
that particular engine speed have been
optimized, the rpm is increased to the next
point and the entire procedure is repeated
again. The process continues, point by point, up
to the engine's maximum speed. This technique is
called experimental, point-by-point curve
fitting. There is no more effective way to power
tune an engine.
Hypertech Power Tuning calibrations are
extensively road tested under "real world"
driving conditions to verify their performance.
The result: Power gains you can feel and
dependability you can trust! The results can be
very impressive. For example, our Max Energy
Power Programmer for Dodge Cummins 5.9L HO
Diesels produced a gain of 285 ft./lbs. torque
and 174 horsepower without opening the hood!
How Power Tuning Works
The factories tune for average drivers who might
buy low-octane gasoline and lug the engine. Our
calibrations are engineered for drivers who care
about performance and use premium-grade fuel.
Gains of 10 to 20 horsepower with 3 to 7 tenths
of a second improvement in acceleration times
from 0 to 70 mph are typical - some improvements
are even greater. However, some applications can

"I have to tell you about my
experience with your Power Programmer III on my 2004 F150
2wd Super Crew with a 5.4 3-valve. After reading the
instructions, I did the installation as the Programmer
instructed, and in about 15 minutes it was all done. And
wow! Even with the 87-octane setting the truck had better
low speed throttle response along with an improved top end
acceleration. But the biggest difference was in the way the
transmission shifted at wide open throttle. It bang shifted
through all the gears with no lag, and yet around town it
acted like a stocker. The icing on the cake was when I took
the truck on vacation for over 3600 miles and I averaged
over 18.1 mpg at an average speed of 74.4 mph. When the
truck was stock I took a 2400 mile trip and it only got 16.4
mpg at about the same average speed. That's over a mile and
a half per gallon better! What a great product! Easy to
install and you get the gains in performance as advertised.

I have a 2003 Ford F250 4X4 4 Door 7.3 Liter Turbo Diesel. I
bought your Hypertech Power Programmer, part #41029 from my
friends parts store in Garden City, Michigan, and I put the
Stage 3 engine program in, also the firmer shifts. It is as
different as night and day. I really like that you just
touch the gas and you get results. Before, just to take off
normally, I had to mash the gas pedal down about half way to
get it moving. But now, just a touch of the gas and you're
gone. I am impressed. I was gonna buy Superchips but wanted
to give the Power Programmer a try. I am at a loss for words
from the gains I got. I put a spankin' on my buddies lighter
Hemi Dodge Truck that went 15.0s in the 1/4 mile. I just
want to relay my good experience.
