About BMW Rims Production Methods: There are several different manufacturing methods used to make rims for your BMW, each offering something different. The most popular types of wheels production methods are: gravity casting, low pressure casting, Flow-forming, and forged. Below you will find an explanation of each method, so you can see which type of wheels would best suit your needs.
Gravity Cast BMW Rims Gravity casting wheels is the relatively the easiest way to make a wheel, and offers a relatively cheap cost when compared to a flow-formed or forged wheel. During this process aluminum or an alloy is poured into a mold and simply uses earth's gravity to form the shape and design of the wheel. Since gravity is the only force used in production, the material will not be as dense as a low pressure cast wheel (or higher quality construction methods) and requires more metal to achieve the same structural strength, meaning the weight will be heavier than that of a low pressure or higher method construction.
Low Pressure Cast BMW Rims Low pressure casting utilizes virtually the same process as gravity casting with the addition of positive pressure to allow for a higher density within the wheel, which translates into less wheel weight. Low pressure cast wheels generally cost slightly more than gravity cast wheels, and marginally stronger. This is the most popular production method in use today.
Flow Form Wheels Flow form casting is a procedure that turns the wheel over a special mandrel and forms the wheel using three hydraulic rollers that apply tremendous pressure. The pressure and turning then forces the wheel area to form against the mandrel, creating the shape and width of the wheel. During flow forming, the wheel actually "flows" down to create the full wheel width. During this, pressure applied to the cast wheel actually changes its mechanical properties, so its strength and impact values become similar to those of a forged wheels. That translates to up to 15% less weight when compared to a standard cast wheel.
Forged BMW Rims A wheel that is made using a forging method is the strongest, lightest, and typically the most durable when compared to a wheel made using any other production methods. During this process aluminum is shaped using extreme pressure, which translates into a very high strength wheel. Since making a forged wheel require very specialized machined forged wheels often command a much higher aftermarket price than BMW wheels made in any other type of method. |
